i believe that AI is inherently uncreative, and used poorly you just create slop,

if an artist can use AI to help them make something good, then it’s not that bad.

The number of games that have used Google Translate for years is huge. LLMs are just a tool and they’re a better tool for programmatic translation than Google Translate but are inferior to human translation in my experience. That said, LLMs for translation so more people can experience a game than a developer can afford to support isn’t necessarily bad. They should just make it very clear which languages were programmatically translated.

Using AI artwork assets as placeholders is also something I don’t have issue with - it means developers spend more time working on the game than generating assets (and assets are redone so many times during development, it makes sense to not waste time until you know exactly what you need an artist to make).

Shipping AI slop is, however, not cool and I don’t support it whatsoever. The Alters seem to have accidentally left one placeholder in the game which they’ve apologised for. I feel if they make it clear which languages aren’t human translated and offer refunds for those languages if people want to refund, is an okay resolution to this. I don’t think they need full pitchfork action. It’s not like they generated all their assets etc with AI.

we had shovelware slop before AI.

slop is the problem, AI makes creative slop easier (almost trivial). but by the end , the slop is the issue, regardless of the tools used to create it.

Using AI for translations is one thing. Their leadership recently partnering with ZA/UM is quite a bit more concerning for their employees IMO.

I don’t really care that much. I’m quite happy for AI to be used to create more content in my games wherever it’s appropriate. If a company can use AI to create all the mundane background content that nobody really wants to make then who cares? It doesn’t necessarily mean that they’re going to fire people, it might just be the same people making more content.

Also, I know they were using it for translations. AI is actually excellent at translating and it’s better than not having them.
