Smoothwall. I used to run it a lot back in the early 2000s for personal use and even helped set up a couple small businesses with it but I don’t hear of anyone else using it these days, people seem to love openwrt and pfsense more.
It was great for just taking any old x86 machine and making a powerful, fully featured firewall/router out of it, including a VPN server, all through a web interface. Nowadays that’s boring shit but in 2002 it was pretty cool.

How do I type something? There’s a cursor but keyboard input doesn’t work for me. You oughtta make it do some dummy commands for fun, or better yet, some real ones in a sandbox, that’d be neat, for fun user interactivity. Otherwise, looks slick. Good job.
I’m too old to be nostalgic for skeuomorphism. But a retina-burning amber monochrome monitor, text mode, with menus and UIs built out of ASCII graphics, or at best, 640 x 480 CPU-driven graphics modes? Now you’re talking.
From my perspective, the skeuomorphic era of the early-late 2000s is still “modern”.
Maxis did something like that once in the 90s with Streets of Simcity, where you can load up a city you created and race around in it.
Mobile games are the equivalent of those “100 great games pack”-type CDROMS you’d find in the electronics section of stores in the late 90s/early 2000s. Not many invest serious money and time into gaming on a tablet or phone like they do on a console or PC, because games on phones and tablets are more like an afterthought. Something to do in between group chats and work emails.
As an addition to your post, I’m also in the process of learning C/C++, and I’m curious also how others arrange their actual project files and include directories. Like, for example, if there’s a bunch of classes having to do with UI elements, do you just group them each under their own file all in their own directory? I’ve also seen projects where everything was just thrown into the top level directory, both headers and implementation files together in a giant pile of source files.
Happens. Cars used to need special skills to even get started and drive around. Now a five year old can start one and drive off if they can reach the pedals. But they won’t have any clue how it actually works.
My computer is on a workbench that already has a mess of wires and electronic components on it. One less wire is great. I barely game. I don’t need the quick response.
Conputer users should have technical knowledge to do stuff like that.
It’s not the 80s anymore. Normies are using computers now.
That’s what some third parties do for ancient OSes that can no longer use Windows Update but where people want to at least have the last patches made for it, like when people make retro machines. There’s an installer package out there that will apply every Windows 98 update ever released in one go. Same for XP I think.

Same here. My favorite game is Kerbal Space Program, and the graphics look like they are straight out of the early 2000s, but even with a 12 core CPU I still get crazy lag during explosions, staging, and other physics interactions. Transitioning from “on rails” flight to actually modelling physics when within a few km of something else has also not ever been smooth.

I guess my point it, why does it matter? We both know what it means. The language has accomplished its goal of communication.
No better way to learn and get used to it than ripping off the bandage and being forced to deal with it. That’s what I did. Been Windows-free for ten years. If you still have a Windows partition around, it may be too tempting to just go back to it when things get a bit hairy.
As far as games, yeah, it sucks that I can’t play some games, but I’ve filled that time with more productive hobbies. I can program C and C++ now, self taught on Linux.
But the more people that jump ship, the more developers will target Linux, so it’s just a matter of time now before you can play anything again. It’s definitely a 1000x better environment now than when I switched back then.
