Oh. I was asking if WSL meant wayland? I don’t know if I use WSL I’d venture to guess. I do not.

Ah, I see. WSL is a Windows feature called “Windows Subsystem for Linux”. It integrates and allows the use of full Linux distributions inside Windows. Yes, one of the reasons the hell froze, BTW. There are select distributions supported and integrated, such as Ubuntu, and now CachyOS too. That’s why its posted in Linux community.

I never looked deep into it in detail. It’s not a virtual machine. I imagine its something like WINE maybe, but maybe deeper integrated as Microsoft does not need to reverse engineer Linux and all components. I don’t know if this is actually true. You can read more about WSL here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Subsystem_for_Linux

So there’s wsl v1 that is a set of bindings yet segregated in some environment but with full access to the outisde scope (that’s how sensible it is) --> no kernel here -> partial kernel compatibility. V1 is essentially a microsoft baked msys2 / cygwin

And there’s wsl v2 that’s a different thing and is essencially a vm --> no std drivers here -> partial driver compatibility. V2 is essentially a microsoft baked virtualbox / vmware

I take the chance to remind every sane person coping with windows to use winget as symptomatic treatment.
