The Elder Scrolls 6 taking a backseat to Starfield was a matter of the Todd Howard dragging Bethesda along for the ride, Skyrim's co-lead has suggested.
It probably unpopular here, but I think that starfield first was a good idea. It let them build and test a full game after changes to the engine. The feedback the mixed results can help make ES6 better if they actually listen to it.

I genuinely enjoyed Starfield for what it was.
It’s not a perfect game by any means, but I had a good time.
