On linux it’s just called running an executable

Edit: As a less snarky answer, you can run Android apps natively on linux by installing Android OS in a container using something like Anbox Waydroid.

I think the biggest thing lacking in this kind of hardware is displays. Where can you find a phone-sized 1080p display that doesn’t require signing some NDA or reverse engineering the specs? OLED would be even better for battery life.

I don’t see that probably 360p black-or-white e-ink display is going to be a good experience unless you’re comparing it to a flip phone.

Can that not run through Proton? You could probably launch it through Steam, even if you bought your copy somewhere else. I have loads on external apps added just for easy setup with Proton

Bit rot happens on much longer time scales (like 10+ years), and can happen regardless of use. Most storage media has this as an issue though, so that’s why it’s always good to have backups.

Save games probably wouldn’t have a huge effect on write endurance, but certainly in some uses that write constantly like a dashcam, it could potentially destroy the flash in a matter of months. There are endurance sd cards for this kind of application, but they usually come in smaller sizes, and I’ve still had them fail eventually.

Once upon a time I owned a GameCube memory card, specifically so that I could have my own save progression when visiting my friend’s house (who actually owned the GameCube and games). That may not really apply anymore?

On another note though, making the sd card read only means it will last significantly longer. Flash storage (like SD cards) have limited write cycles, so this preserves the games themselves while leaving the much smaller save files to be written somewhere else where they’re easier to back up.

“nouveau” != “Nvidia open source drivers”. Nouveau was community made by reverse engineering. Nvidia has released their own open source drivers now.

It already goes over 100% market share after only 8 squares. 512% seems like a weird place to stop? How can you have more than 100% market share?

I don’t think this changes anything for movies unless there’s somewhere you can “buy” a copy of a movie but they don’t let you download an offline copy. If they “rent” you the movie or you “subscribe” to a streaming service, none of this applies.

Ah interesting, so the European banks have agreements on how to settle wire transfers quickly, but going outside those SEPA agreements gets you about the same experience as US wire transfers.

That SEPA system seems kind of nice, since in the US it’s been up to a bunch of private companies (like PayPal, Visa, and MasterCard) to pick up the slack and enable instant transfers. We’ve only recently got the Zelle system, which is free and instant, but even that’s just run by some corporation that went around making agreements with banks on their own.

Unfortunately, for this sort of international transaction, the only real options are: Credit card companies (via credit or debit), SWIFT wire transfers (slow and expensive), or Crypto (volatile and maybe slow depending on which one).

I’ve had annoying times trying to purchase parts from a small UK company, since my only option was wire transfer with a $65 fee, or calling them long distance and giving a credit card over the phone at 1am my time)

As far as I can tell it means nothing, it’s just the branding for the “Lossless Scaling” tool on Steam. There’s no new lossless algorithm involved here.

ACH is Automated Clearing House, which is US-specific and what’s used for faster bank-to-bank transfers than wire. They still take up to a day or two to clear. I suspect what you are calling a wire transfer is not actually the same thing as a SWIFT network wire transfer, which is what’s used for international transactions. German banks might have arrangements for doing domestic transfers more quickly, and obviously it’s instant if the recipient is at the same bank, but I don’t know that that’s considered a wire transfer anymore. It would be a direct deposit/debit through some other bank-bank system. (In Canada this would be like Interac transfers, or Zelle in the US)

Maybe it’s different in Germany, but at least in the US, wire transfers have a fee. My bank even charges me $5 just to receive a wire transfer, and if I wanted to send money internationally it’s a $65 fee. It’s a terrible system to buy things too because it takes days for the transfer to clear.

Another comment mentioned ACH, but that is not the same as a wire transfer.

Ironically HoloISO also can’t be installed easily right now since all the prepared downloads are missing. You could maybe built it yourself from source, but I haven’t figured it out…

These don’t seem to be particularly new panels. $600 and only 97% of the sRGB color space (= ~78% DCI-P3), meanwhile a similarly priced LG “QNED” can do 90-95% of DCI-P3. I’m not sure you can even call those TVs HDR if they’re only 8-bit color. None of these models can even remotely compare to a brand new OLED TV.

And it makes the 64gb models on ebay actually a good deal since you can upgrade the SSD and it have a full performance 2TB Steam Deck
