  • The other problem with this is that this is all controlled through the Play store API, not your device, so they can yank your access to all of those unverified apps any time they want and say “actually, no verification = no run, fuck you, pay me”

If you don’t think they will, that they’re not just dying to do exactly that and squeeze people just that little extra bit more for YT Premium subscriptions or whathaveyou, ask the people who had their movies yoinked from their library with no warning by Sony (over fucking licensing costs, at that, not even hurting their profits directly) if they thought that would ever happen and how it worked out for them.

yeah and if they pirate it they’ll have even more money for gas and groceries or anything else (like games from better companies), several hours of entertainment for absolutely free, and they won’t be giving money to a shitty, greedy corporation that plays stupid games with copyright law.

I’m not really sure what you’re trying to drive at by breaking it down into an hourly cost. Free is still cheaper than 14 cents an hour, and giving money to Nintendo (a multi-billion dollar company that plays fuck fuck games with content creators and acts like a patent troll, among other things) is still bad no matter how insignificant you think $70-$80 is to pay – fun fact, for some of us, that is a significant chunk of our monthly disposable income, and we don’t all want to spend our only spare cash for an entire month on a single game. So there’s a very real possibility they don’t have money for both. Maybe their car grenaded itself this month. Maybe their AC died. Maybe they’ve got a funeral to pay for and they want a pleasant distraction. You don’t know what they can afford, you’re not looking at their checkbook.

Entertainment should not be gatekept by one’s economic prosperity or lack thereof; poor people do not deserve to be bored any more than they deserve to be hungry, or homeless, or sick. I’m a little more irritated when people pirate from small indie developers (but I still accept there is good that can come of this, i.e. try before you buy), but Nintendo on the other hand can eat my entire ass; they do not need anyone whiteknighting for them and their profits online, they pay plenty of lawyers for that so you ought not do it for them for free.

I, for one, would be in favor of selling physical PC games on flash drives. Like, flash drives are (were? not sure how bad the chip shortage has hit them, if at all) dirt cheap, and even the biggest games today generally don’t go far beyond 128GB (not counting post-launch patches), and I can find 128GB flash drives retailing for $10 right now at Micro Center. I assume a big enough publisher buying in bulk could get them far cheaper and more price optimized for this specific use case, and 256GB drives for even larger games for not much more. It would be more expensive than discs or cards, true; but not every PC has a disc drive or SD card reader, every PC these days has USB ports and most of them have USB 3.0 now. And still being smaller and more durable than a disc the same way cards are, could save on packaging costs if they optimized the packaging for it.

I also feel that people buying physical PC games are usually enthusiasts willing to pay a premium, anyhow, and giving them a reasonably nice flash drive with the game on it would feel more “substantial” than just getting a card or disc in a plastic case.

Seriously, dude above you forgot the series that made Bungie a name almost every gamer is aware of in the same way we’ve pretty much all heard of, say, id or Bethesda. Halo was in no way “smaller scope” or focused only on singleplayer (at least, it definitely wasn’t after CE), Halo was the reason most people bought an Xbox. People who were camping outside fucking GameStop for the launch of (insert favorite Halo here) will remember this well.

  • Nice, but no longer open source as of like two years ago, and the creator apparently likes to put surprises in the installer that lead to deliberate memory leaks and random evil laughter being played over your speakers. This is supposedly to punish users for interfering with the installer (which normally tries to make you install shitware), but apparently this behavior has also been triggered by normal users accidentally. I’m not running that shit on my machine, it’s about a half step away from being malware now. A real shame as I remember CE 6.3 back in the day being really nice to use.

  • I suspect that, given it’s just a controller, they likely won’t run into the same supply issues that might hit the steam machine or frame. That and I’m anticipating it will sell stronger, for longer, than their first steam controller; so even if stock does sell out at some stage I wouldn’t expect them to discontinue it for some years, any stock shortage would likely be brief.

Lastly, the staggered release cycle will probably help them manage supply issues (if they do arise) better than if they were to release all of them at the same time (the people buying a controller now, won’t need to buy one bundled with a steam machine later, etc).

I really wouldn’t worry about this while on a job hunt. Wait til you’re financially secure and then treat yo self.
