“ricing” was a term in use in the car modding scene around the 80s and 90s especially, where among certain groups it was popular to modify Japanese import cars with kits and decals etc to mimic the look of the Japanese racing scene.

Some people considered these mods to be tacky and worthless because they usually tended to focus more on aesthetics than performance, purely tricking the car up visually with no other changes. Due to the Asian origin of these mods and the stereotype that Asians eat a lot of rice, the cars were insultingly dubbed “rice burners” or " ricers" and the process of doing it “ricing”

It was intended 100% as an insult, basically meaning “Your car looks like shit because of all that Japanese crap you put on it”

Like many insults of course, the insult is often “reclaimed” by the group it targets, who begin to use it between themselves in a favourable way, without any insult or negative connotation.

Ricing in the context of computers where people are styling, theming and “tricking out” their desktop almost certainly was borrowed from the car scene.

By this point there is basically no negative intent around the term at all, and especially not racist, but the place the term came from was.

I can totally agree that games should prioritise being fun above having pretty graphics.

We don’t know exactly what they are spending the time on.

The article says “more time to create the world of Albion” but that’s the article paraphrasing - the source video simply states “more time” - and doesn’t specify for what.

I’m sure world design is a part of it, but quests, characters, optimisations, bugfixes and all of that are surely a part too.

Personly I’m very glad that the studio are being given the time they need instead of rushing out some rubbish.

One could argue that Tado should have had more certainty about their business model before they started selling promises they couldn’t keep, but that’s business I suppose.

Presumably Tado anticipated they could capture customers on a free tier and upsell later, but it turns out that when customers have a fully functional basic tier, they generally don’t want to pay money for extras they don’t care about.

And so now, Tado are left with an online service that costs them money to run, but no ongoing revenue. So of course they will try to monetise the subscription.

Of course, part of the problem is that customers have almost been conditioned to expect cloud stuff to be free. And so that’s the price Tado tried to aim for, and now that is causing problems.

Either way though, what they are doing now represents “changing the deal” Darth Vader style - the product previously was a one time purchase and then free after, and they are now trying to make it paid after selling it as free. And that is bad.

It was to figure out if they /really did/ start charging for it, how many people would actually pay.

I hope Tado goes bust because they don’t deserve to survive, treating customers like that.

The cause of enshittification is essentially the shareholder pressure for endless and exponential growth that comes from public ownership.

Valve is a privately held company, and as long as it remains that way it doesn’t have those perverse incentives.

Genuine question. I haven’t really used peertube.

The nice thing about Gator Game was that movement felt so good and fluid. It really is just a game about jumping and climing and bouncing around like a hyper kid.

Given the game doesn’t have ‘combat’ they really really needed to get traversal right because that’s the main draw, and they succeeded in that.

I got lost a few times too, but I think they did a good job of providing mitigation for that with specific large landmarks you can see at least one of from anywhere, like the big tree, the mountain, the windmill.

I understand what the devs were trying to do by not having a map. When a map is there, especially an always-on minimap, I basically spend my whole time with my eyes glued to that tiny corner of the screen rather than actually looking at the world. So I can respect the decision to try and do without any map.

It’s AIs ans automated systems all the way down at this point. No humans in the loop, just machines talking to machines.

I use Pop for gaming and it just works.

As a plus, I also love the somewhat mac-ish UX design, although that won’t be to everyone’s taste.

Even though air frying doesn’t need Internet, the manufacturer is restricting that feature as a way to force you to set up the WiFi, so they can then slurp up all your data.

They’re literally holding the feature hostage, as motivation.

I was almost convinced they were keeping this broken on purpose, it’s been broken so long. Like, years long.

It was broken so long I honestly wouldn’t have been surprised if news surfaced that Discord was taking back-handers from Microsoft under the table to keep it broken. With steam working so well on Linux now, broken discord streaming without actual working audio share was one of the last things that posed a hurdle for gamers ditching Windows.

Yes

Vita was technically impressive, far more capable than the DS. I’ve got an OLED Vita and I’m amazed how nice it still looks.

But the Vita inevietably lost to Nintendo because it struggled with popularity, and therefore struggled with number of games made for it. It’s a catch 22.

If Sony can make a portable that plays all your PS5 library (without needing to buy any of it again) then they might actually be on a winner.

Like, why the hell wasn’t it before now already?
