Actually back in the old days with daily cron jobs they’d usually trigger at 3 or 4AM and make your IDE hard drive chatter for a while. I think the systemd jobs work like acron and just fire once the machine is woken up if it’s past time for them to run.
Most ‘hackers’ are just mid tier (mediocre) IT level types who rely on existing exploits floating around in the wild. It’d probably be hard to find any still in circulation for such an old system.
Nah you can use ghetto smtp to relay incoming mail to a different port on your server if your ISP blocks incoming 25 and sendinblue (it’s changed names but my sendinblue config is still working) to send outgoing mail if they block outgoing 25. It’s less than ideal but doable for low volume private email servers.

They had no idea what any of it was. “Ultra religious” usually means they just believed their leaders when they were told something was bad or good.
Any distro that ships KDE/Plasma as its default desktop should do the trick. I’m not personally using it right now but I hear OpenSUSE Tumbleweed is kicking a lot of rear end lately.
I would argue that it does dominate the desktop now as well, just not by usage numbers.
If I was told I had to use a windows desktop these days at home I think I’d start investing in a very large book collection.
Definitely look into fail2ban. There might be something newer out there, but something like that is essential for running open WAN ports.
I bought an xp-pen pro (15 inchish) for my daughter xmas before last and she uses it almost every day on her steamdeck desktop.

I was a little late getting to the compiz party but I used it as my default WM for years and years. It is still being updated and is now extremely stable (which I understand was the biggest issue in its early days). I have surrendered to the darkside though and just use KDE cause it does everything that almost anyone could need now and it does it pretty good.
I probably would have been at 5000 in my college years alone.
