Are they infiltrating open source projects too now?
As is the way of my people 🇨🇦, I would like to make an apology. It is as follows:
Sometimes, in the heat of the moment, I will say things I later regret. So take this as a blanket statement: if you and I have ever gotten in an argument on Lemmy/Piefed and I called you a mean name (such as ‘stupid’, ‘angry little elf’, ‘grumpy little fella’, etc.), then I am sorry. In most cases, I was not the first to one to fire a shot, but that is beside the point. Please accept my apology nonetheless.
My other account is @[email protected]

Theres talk of a new law in California that requires operating systems to verify the users’ age. This would be a way of implementing that in Linux distros

I see. Thanks for the info

How would this work exactly? The post office would send cash around the same way they send letters around, or would they just handle direct bank transfers?

Other than Bitcoin or cryptocurrencies, what’s the solution to this problem?
Yeah. I bought my kaptop second hand. When it still had windows on it, it was basically usuable because jt was so laggy. I installed linux and, badda bing badda boom, works like a charm. Its been my main computer for a fee years now
Yeah everyone seems out to get Firefox lately. I almost wonder if its the Chromium gang tryna slander the competition

I like learning new tech too, but if we’re being realistic then we have to admit that the fediverse will not grow unless we spoon feed it to people. Maybe we don’t want it to grow that much. That’s a conversation we could have. But we should acknowledge that there are tradeoffs here

These are good ideas. Hopefully something like that happens one day. In addition to events it would be nice if there were more in-person groups (eg for a class or local community group) that chose to connect online primarily through the Fediverse. You see that kind of thing happening with Discord. It would be good if we could do something similar here.

Stuff like this is why Bluesky is more popular than Mastodon. We need to find a way to fix these little quirks if we are serious about growing the fediverse

As far as I can tell piefed.ca seems to be less regulated than piefed.social

I think a simple ‘popular’ or ‘trending’ feed wouldn’t need user tracking. Or if it was really needed to be customized maybe users could opt into share what topics they are interested in when they sign up

How can we create something exclusive to the fediverse?

Technically in the ad it was the children’s pet. So they’ve managed to do a two-in-one and hit both demographics
Yeah especially if OP sticks with their Mac. The WiFi drivers won’t work on Mac without proprietary drivers
Also worth noting: you don’t need to get ride of MacOS to try linux! You don’t even need to make any permanent changes to your computer. You can also just boot from a USB and see how you like it. This is different from adding the distro to your computer with a USB. Because when you’re just booting from a USB it doesn’t make any permanent changes to your hardware; it literally just runs linux off your USB. Files won’t even be saved between sessions (unless you really tinker around with it, but even then the files will only be saved on your USB). This is a low risk way to play around and check out how well different distros work on your Mac.
I suggest trying Ubuntu. It’s super beginner friendly and has great documentation which should guide you through booting from your USB. I put Ubuntu on my Mac back in the day and it worked great but the speakers didn’t work because the drivers weren’t open source. You should boot Ubuntu from a USB and play around with some sound sources to see what I mean. Since this will likely be the biggest problem you face with Mac its worth checking out before making permanent changes
CodeBerg sounds great but this doesn’t seem like a longterm solution. If CodeBerg ends up getting really big then it will get overrun with slop as well. We need to find a way to cut the slop problem off at its source, but I have no idea how that could actually work.

I was being hyperbolic but the point is the article didn’t point any real negativity towards the users of big tech, just the corporations or CEOs or whoever behind big tech
Whats the XZ thing? Im out of the loop
