Pretty sure they’re talking about making a distro, not forking the Linux kernel. I don’t see any reason why they would need to fork it anyway.

I use a refurbished 10tb HDD for my server too and it works just fine
I don’t use glide typing, so I didn’t even notice that 😅
But text prediction and glide typing are being rewritten from the ground up currently, so it’ll be there eventually
I use Florisboard Beta with the FloriStyle theme (It’s a Gboard theme). The only thing I really miss with it is text predictions but they’re still working on that and it’s not that big of a deal.
The way it works is that you need a proprietary app (in the past it was on PC and you had to connect the phone over USB, now it’s an app on the phone) where you log in with the Xiaomi Account that is also logged in on your phone. Then you “request” a bootloader unlock and after a week or so you can do the same thing again and it unlocks the bootloader. My guess would be that it uses encryption on the phone in some way and the server sends the decryption key. I also just thought that the process is so tedious that someone should have come up with a way to circumvent it already but maybe no one wanted to invest the time since it was possible that way. Either way, I don’t have experience with this kind of thing, so I’m not really the person to figure it out.
Based on how much HyperOS (and the fucking name) sucks, I wouldn’t be surprised if someone finds a way to unlock the bootloader. I really hope someone does soon because I really don’t want my dad to continue getting tortured by having to use it.
So that’s why unlocking the bootloader on my dad’s phone doesn’t work. This really sucks, I hope there’s some other way to do it because HyperOS is straight ass.
Using the iGPU might save power but the resolution doesn’t need to be turned down for that
Whaaaaat…? In a time of economic struggles, companies would rather support fascists than risk letting socialism take over? This certainly never happened before, especially not in Germany.
Freetube just loads the videos from YouTube directly if you don’t activate the proxy option (which will use Invidious or Piped, haven’t used Freetube in a while so idk which one it was)
DNS should be working, I manually set the DNS server. I don’t really wanna install docker tho, I feel like that could cause other issues. If it only works in docker, that doesn’t really help me anyway, does it?
No, is that required?
There’s @loops@pixelfed.social, which is getting a beta release soon
There’s a lot of FOSS music apps that just use YTMusic, like ViMusic or the ones other people mentioned in their replies. For maps, I use Organic Maps, the only thing I feel like is missing from it is traffic jams but I think you can see why that would be hard to add. It does have features that Google Maps doesn’t have tho.
If you buy a used one, you can probably get it a good but cheaper as well
I think there’s also similar devices to a Raspberry Pi that are cheaper
I also have a fingerprint reader in the screen but I feel like the one on the back of my Redmi 5 Plus was more reliable. It’s not a dealbreaker tho.
You can already charge wirelessly. As for the speakers, Samsung has an OLED TV that vibrates the glass of the screen to produce sound, maybe something similar would be possible on a phone too. Don’t know if something similar would be possible for the mic.
Don’t get me wrong, I wouldn’t want a phone like that but it would be cool to see if it’s possible.
Hab ich tatsächlich schon gemacht, aber iwie funktioniert das noch nicht ganz. Weil ich selber nicht rausfinden konnte warum, hab ich grad nen post gemacht wo ich nach Hilfe frage.
You could also wait a few weeks or months and then put the latest version of the distro you’d prefer on your USB stick and just boot from it to see if your issues have been fixed
